An OpEd in the local Berkeley newspaper by a concerned citizen focuses on the ongoing battle to get Pacific Steel Casting (PSC) to clean up its act.
The author, Mark McDonald, points to the fact that there are many obstacles. In addition to pushing PSC to clean up operations, he says activists must put pressure on the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and Berkeley's Zoning Adjustments Board.
Activists are conducting ongoing monitoring work in West Berkeley and are using the results to push these groups toward action. The monitoring results have showed consistently high levels of several dangerous heavy metals in the air. A Body Burden study, currently in the works, will add more data about the impacts of the industry on the surrounding community.
