CUDDALORE:
PMK leader Ramadoss on Sunday asked the Tamil Nadu government to withdraw the
permission granted to a private company to set up a 1320 mega watt power project
at Nochikadu near Cuddalore by acquiring agricultural lands.
Ramadoss, after holding a
public hearing of the nearby villagers, said he will not allow the acquisition
of farm lands for the proposed thermal project and threatened to stage an
agitation.
The proposed
project by Cuddalore Power Company to come up at a cost of Rs 6000 crores,
required 1200 acres of land, of which it had already acquired 400 acres.
Around 5000 villagers,
including women, had gathered at the public hearing. They said that the project
would severely affect their livelihood besides causing environmental problems.
They claimed the plant would
endanger the marine life and also contaminate the ground water.
Some of the farmers whose land
had already been acquired, wanted it to be returned.
